If you're planning on having a natural labor, you've no doubt been warned that you need to have some quotes and sayings on hand to motivate you when the going gets rough. While our secular friends are limited to drab sayings about the medical benefits of natural labor or vague niceties, such as the famous "Your body is not a lemon," we Catholics have a wealth of quotes from the saints that we can draw from. Why? Because our Church is built on suffering, and you can use the suffering you endure during labor to grow in holiness and pray for the world. Below are some of my favorites to have my husband read to me to get me through pain-medication-free labor.
"Our Lady did not run away from anything; she ran into it. That 'can't bear' attitude won't do. We must make ourselves face it and bear it." -Fr. Vincent McNabb, O.P.
"There could not be a surer sign of God's love for you than this pain that He has sent you. Adore the Divine Will." -St. Paul of the Cross
"His heart could not be satiated with sufferings." -spoken about an ancient monk/hermit by his spiritual director
"Lord, don't let me chicken out if you have something hard for me to do." -Mother Angelica
"Love that cannot suffer is not worthy of that name." -St. Claire
"Lord, I suffer willingly for Thee whatsoever Thou art pleased should befall me." -St. Therese of Lisieux
